We are about protecting and restoring the nature we already have.

About

Everything we do has an impact on our planet. Nature works hard already, but we need to help it deal with what we have and are doing to harm it. To give it a helping hand, we will start by planting new woodlands and restoring peatland to capture carbon, provide eco-system services and habitats that support our native species.

Wetland Restoration

Wetland landscapes are quiet and still, but they are a fantastic resource for nature and for humans. They filter water, helping make water systems clean.  They slow the flow of water, which helps to prevent flooding. They provide a fantastic habitat for birds and amphibians such as toads, frogs and newts.  They also store huge amounts of carbon more than all other vegetation types - trees etc - in the world combined.

For centuries we have drained and cut wetlands to provide agricultural land and fuel.  Restoring peatland helps to bring back its natural qualities and provides a unique landscape.

Woodland Creation

The UK is one of the most deforested countries in Europe.  In particular, we have lost our native trees that are essential to support our native species, as well as storing carbon and preventing soil erosion.

Get Involved

We want to invite local people to get to know and appreciate nature by helping us safeguard our wetland. If you are interested in helping us please send us a message.

Our first bog!

In August 2019 New Woodland Creation became the proud owner of Polkemmet Moss

Bog walking...

On 25th September we walked over Polkemmet Moss with experts from the Land and Forestry Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage.  All I can say is that parts of it are still beautiful, despite everything that has been done to it.  Walking across a bog is really hard work - we sank to our thighs several times.

This is an aerial photograph of Polkemmet Moss.  The visible lines are where peat has been cut.

Next steps

The next step is the restoration plan.  We expect this to involve blocking the drainage ditches which will raise the water table and rewet the peat.  This will help the existing flora to spread out across the bog.  Raising the water table and allowing the natural vegetation to regrow will stop the emission of greenhouse gases.
